NorthAxis is the leading athletic and academic consulting company for select student athletes.  Our expertise is available for a variety of sports, cultures and age groups.  Today’s student athletes encounter pivotal phases on a much more frequent basis due to the complexity of the recruiting process.  NorthAxis has been operating for roughly eight years and our services have been modified each year to accommodate changes in college athletic recruiting and the relentless demand for excellent athletes, hard-working students, and exceptional people.

One aspect of NorthAxis has remained the same through the years; help students acquire the best education possible and help athletes reach their potential.

NorthAxis is a consulting and advisory company, not a pro sports agency; we excel at providing opportunities at a variety of levels including youth sports, prep school, juniors and college.  We consult families on any and all issues relating to the pursuit of college athletics.  Each student athlete will discover their own path to reaching his or her goals which is why we work closely together to ensure each step allows for the best opportunity to reach short and long term goals.

Here are a few topics often encountered:

Outside Influences:  Families today are being pulled in many different directions by friends, colleagues, coaches, family members, agents, etc., as to what the best approach is.  As a unique student athlete, your path to reaching your goals will depend on what you are best suited for both athletically and academically, not what outsiders think is in your best interest.

Off Season Activity:  Each off season should be used strategically; search out only the top events where you will find three important components; exposure, development, and competition.  There are simply too many watered down events during the off season, most of which, are a waste of time and money.  The off season should be used for training, participating in activities outside of your primary sport, healing injuries, getting grades/test scores up, visiting potential colleges, and spending time with friends and family.

Strategic Positioning:  It is no secret that stable organizations, reputable coaches and winning teams attract the majority of the scouts.  As in all aspects of life, relationships play a key role in overall success.  Our experiences will prove to be an asset to you whether your next step is college, junior, prep school, or the various levels of youth sports.

If you’re good enough, they will find you:  Unfortunately this has become a myth.  With the vast number of above average athletes all fighting for a small number of positions, athletes need to work harder, work smarter and be more proactive than ever before as scouts are evaluating players in the United States, Canada and overseas.  Remember, recruiters have a difficult job as they are required to scout athletes 13 or 14 years old up to 20 and 21 year olds.

Scouting vs. Recruiting:  Many families today misunderstand communication with college coaches.  It’s easy to get excited about a letter or email from a college coach but what is sometimes forgotten is that a lot of athletes get letters and emails from coaches.  Receiving something from a coach means they either like you as an athlete, heard another team is looking at you, or got your name from a list.  Of course you hope they like you as an athlete however this often is not the case.  You will know when you are being recruited; you will be asked for transcripts, a scholarship or financial aid package will be discussed, an official visit will be planned, and you will receive regular calls, emails, etc., from the coaching staff.

Power of the Buzz:  The recruiting process is full of questions, sleepless nights, frustration, and secrecy.  If a college coach is interested in you as a student athlete they don’t usually broadcast this information to the world.  We all understand why a college coach would want to keep their list of potential recruits to themselves however this actually works against you.  Coaches want you to do 2 things: 1) don’t tell anyone else about the communication and 2) report back any communication from other schools.

Here’s what they are actually doing; if they are the only school actively recruiting you, there is no hurry to provide you with an offer; they can then sit on you and see how you develop and if a better player comes along, they can pursue that avenue as well.  In addition, they want to get you at a bargain and if they are the only school on board, they hold all the cards.  By generating a buzz, your stock goes up and your parents end up saving more on a scholarship or financial aid package.

As part of our program we assist with and encourage today’s athletes to develop meaningful relationships with college coaches as well as research a wide array of collegiate programs to uncover appropriate matches for each student athlete’s academic and athletic needs.  All student athletes are at different stages in their sport, school and in life which is why we start fresh with each new or potential client.  By establishing a game plan with goals to be met, together we ensure your best interests are looked after so you are armed with all the tools necessary to be a success in your professional life after athletics.
